Direct answer
Scan a clear Japanese price tag, confirm which number the app selected, and treat the converted amount as an estimate. OCR can misread text, FX data can be cached, and the store’s tax treatment or card rate controls the amount you actually pay.
Plan from the neighborhood out
Japanese tags can show tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive amounts, discount labels, multiple item references, or stylized typography. The scanner uses Apple Vision OCR on device and then parses likely price terms; it cannot guarantee the correct interpretation.
Frankfurter supplies configured exchange-rate data. Converted values can differ from banks, cards, payment processors, cash exchange, and the final store receipt.
Practical steps
- 01
Frame one tag clearly
Reduce reflections, crop out nearby labels, and keep the relevant amount large enough for OCR.
- 02
Review the detected text
Confirm the selected number and tax wording before trusting the result.
- 03
Check the source and home currencies
A correct number with the wrong currency pair still creates a misleading estimate.
- 04
Refresh only when needed
Rates may be cached. A refresh requires a network connection and still does not produce a card-network quote.
- 05
Use the receipt as the final record
The store’s checkout and receipt—not OCR—determine the actual purchase amount.
What to verify before you go
- OCR can be incomplete or wrong.
- The scanner does not authenticate products or prices.
- Camera frames, selected pixels, OCR text, parsed prices, and conversion results are not intentionally sent to website analytics.
- Inventory, opening hours, prices, payment methods, tax-free handling, language support, accessibility, and transit conditions can change; verify important details directly before visiting.

Questions
Does scanning upload the photo?
The implemented Vision OCR path processes camera frames and selected photos on device.
Is the converted price exact?
No. It is an estimate based on OCR and configured FX data, which may be cached.
Can the scanner translate product text?
Optional translation uses installed Apple Translation language pairs when supported.
